When two or more teams finish with the same number of league points in a division, tiebreakers determine their final rankings. These rankings affect playoff seeding, so tiebreakers matter even late in the season.

Tiebreaker order

Apply these in sequence until the tie is broken:
  1. Head-to-head record between the tied teams
  2. Head-to-head goal difference between the tied teams
  3. Overall goal difference (entire season)
  4. Coin flip (staff-administered, logged in the audit log)
Tiebreakers are only applied to teams that are tied in points. A team with more points is always ranked higher, regardless of goal difference.

Tiebreaker 1: Head-to-head record

Look only at matches played between the tied teams. Ignore all other matches. Count wins and losses in those head-to-head matches. The team with more head-to-head wins is ranked higher. Example (3-way tie at 9 points):
MatchResult
Team A vs. Team BTeam A wins
Team A vs. Team CTeam C wins
Team B vs. Team CTeam B wins
Head-to-head record among tied teams:
  • Team A: 1-1 (1 point in H2H)
  • Team B: 1-1 (1 point in H2H)
  • Team C: 1-1 (1 point in H2H)
Still tied — proceed to Tiebreaker 2.

Tiebreaker 2: Head-to-head goal difference

Using only the matches played between the tied teams, calculate goals for minus goals against for each team. Continuing the example above:
MatchScores
Team A vs. Team BGame 1: A 3-1 B, Game 2: A 2-1 B → Team A wins 2-0
Team A vs. Team CGame 1: A 1-2 C, Game 2: A 2-3 C → Team C wins 2-0
Team B vs. Team CGame 1: B 2-1 C, Game 2: B 1-2 C, Game 3: B 3-2 C → Team B wins 2-1
Head-to-head goals (in games between tied teams only):
TeamGoals ForGoals AgainstH2H GD
Team A3+2+1+2 = 81+1+2+3 = 7+1
Team B1+1+2+1+3+2 = 103+2+2+1+1+2 = 11-1
Team C2+3+1+2 = 81+2+2+3 = 80
H2H GD ranking: Team A (+1) > Team C (0) > Team B (-1) Tie broken: 1st: Team A, 2nd: Team C, 3rd: Team B.

Tiebreaker 3: Overall goal difference

If H2H GD is also tied, use the entire season’s goal difference (GF minus GA across all matches, not just against the tied teams).
This is why playing as competitively as possible — even in series where the result feels decided — matters. A 5-0 win is better for your overall GD than a 1-0 win, and overall GD can be the difference between a #2 seed and a #4 seed in playoffs.

Tiebreaker 4: Coin flip

In the extremely rare case that overall GD is also tied, a coin flip is administered by staff. The result is announced in the C3 Esports Discord and logged in the audit log.

Multi-team ties

When three or more teams are tied in points, the tiebreaker is applied as a group:
  1. Calculate H2H record only among the tied teams (ignore matches against non-tied teams).
  2. If any team can be separated by H2H record, extract them from the group. The remaining tied teams repeat the process from the beginning.
  3. Continue until all teams are separated or a coin flip is needed.
Important: If a 3-way H2H record still leaves teams tied, you do not “reset” to overall standings — you continue through the tiebreaker list (H2H GD → overall GD → coin flip) for the remaining tied teams.

When tiebreakers are calculated

Tiebreakers are recalculated automatically every time standings are refreshed. You do not need to submit a special request — the system computes them continuously based on confirmed match results. At the end of the regular season, staff freeze and verify the final standings (including tiebreakers) before announcing playoff seedings. Any discrepancies should be reported to staff immediately.
